Weekend Workout

Saturday I spent the day at the beach nurturing my latest obsession…kettlebells!  A friend had mentioned she had been reading my blog and wanted to try kettlebells out for herself.  Eager to find someone who wanted to listen to me ramble on about how much fun they are, I offered to help her and her friend out with the basics.  We had a good time and after they left I did my own workout which was…

100 swings
20 snatches (10 right, 10 left)
3x

3 x 5 military presses each side

stretch

Sunday, I spent a good amount of time eating French toast figuring out my weekly workout schedule because I ate too much French toast today my husband and I are officially beginning the second part of the Enter the Kettlebell program in my preparation for the RKC (hopefully) later this year.   I’m excited.  I like plans.  I like kettlebells.  I like (adore) my husband.  It should be good. Fittingly, the second part of the program is called “The RKC Rite of Passage”.  (Sounds a little hardcore for a girl who likes to lay around in flannel pj’s sipping chamomile listening to Bon Iver.)  It consists of LOTS of presses (and optional pull ups), swings, and snatches.  Light, moderate, and heavy refer to the intensity. The class I am taking with Doug Nepodal fits into this program perfectly because it calls for “variety” days where you practice a variety of moves at a low intensity.  I feel fortunate to have a senior RKC instructor  to lead my “practice” days.  My week (for the next few months) is going to look like this.

Monday
Kettlebells Moderate (Presses, Pull Ups, Swings)
Taekwondo
Tuesday
Kettlebells Variety
Wednesday
Sparring  (No strength training)
Thursday
Kettlebells Variety
Taekwondo
Friday
Kettlebells Heavy Intensity (Presses, Pull Ups, Swings)
Saturday
Rest
Sunday
Kettlebells Light (Presses, Pull Ups, Snatches)

It feels really good to have a (flexible) plan written down in a journal ready to go.  My obsessive compulsive side can’t wait to fill in those little spaces with numbers.  While I 100% believe in having a plan, truthfully, I haven’t been practicing what I preach for the last few months.  Without my plan on paper it’s been easier to come up with excuses and skip workouts.

What are your workout plans for the week?

xoxo

Look at you go with your kettlebells – and on the beach – oh so gorgeous!

This week I am taking the training wheels off baby! I am hitting my 6 workouts and sticking to my nutrition so I can enjoy a Saturday free meal knowing I did all I could for this bum of mine – lol

My week is going to go like this – each day is 60 mins.:
    Mon: Upper + HIIT Cardio
    Tues: Lower
    Wed: Off
    Thur: Lower
    Fri: Upper + HIIT Cardio
    Sat: Plyo + SS Cardio
    Sun: SS Cardio

    Have a great week friend!

I love kettlebells too! What lb kettlebell are you using? Do you use one kettlebell for the whole routine?
BTW: Do you wear gloves while using the kettlebell? I have found it hard to do bare handed, end up with major calluses.

Michelle- Wow your week looks awesome!!! I haven’t done plyo for a while. I sort of “miss” it!

Tracey – That’s cool! I didn’t know you loved them too! I am using a 26lb (12k). Since my upper body is not as strong as my lower body I use that one the most. I typically use one kettlebell for the entire routine. Sometimes I use two. I like using two different weights. No I don’t wear gloves. Since I’m training for the RKC and they don’t allow gloves for the snatch test (maybe the whole weekend) I decided I better just suck it up. Yeah, I have some pretty gnarly callouses. A few weeks ago I got some crazy painful blisters from high rep swings. “Hooking” the bell with my fingers rather than gripping it helps tremendously. I also cut the top part off of some tube socks and will slide it over the top part of my hand covering the part of my hand where the palm meets the fingers. This really helps if my hands are feeling tender.

Janetha – That WOULD be so much FUN to workout together. Someday we will! I am happy you are back from your vacay!!!

It was the great motivation I needed!! Im in jaw dropping awe tho of your workout afterwards. I’m still sore from what we did!! But I’m def. trying to ride the momentum and been doing what I can to workout everyday. Me and Ali (and another friend) are getting togetha in a lil bit to practice/workout.

Again, thanks so much and look forward to getting together again!!!

Thank you for answering my questions! I tried the 25lb bell for my swings yesterday, all 250!!! Man, my heart rate was crazy high! Anyhow, I decided to chalk up my hands (instead of wearing my gloves) and it was much easier. Thank you for the tips!

Way to go Tracey!!!!! Funny you should mention chalk…my husband and I were just talking about trying chalk. My snatches are really sticking in my palms and I was wondering if that might help.

I’m going to try and get some today. Most of the time I use a 26lb bell for snatches because that is what I’ll have to use to pass the RKC snatch test (assuming I lose these extra pounds or else I’ll have to to use the 35lb). However on lighter days I use the 18lb. Right now I can’t even image using the 35lb but it’s a goal of mine! What about you?

I use the 35lb only for 2 handed swings, 26lb for one arm and 18lb-20lb snatches. My snatches still need improvement. I wore my heart-rate monitor yesterday when we did 250 one arm swings, I must have burned 300 calories in approx 10mins!! I will no longer run for cardio ever again:)

I love that pic of you! So cute. Is Brent also doing the RKC (I always laugh at “RKC” because it’s also Royal Kennel Club- my vet/cousin is always joking about his pure-bred RKC dog :-) )

I don’t ever have a plan, isn’t that weird? I just wake up and whatever floats my boat is what I do. I roll in and out of phases of classes I fall in and out of love with, and then other regimens too that I do. I go through phases where I work out at home, or do the stairs. So random. I just know that if I haven’t worked out in about 2-3 days I may as well commit myself to Camarillo (is that mental hospital still there?). :-)
