Kick Start Kick the Sugar Challenge
Today I went to Costco for the 4th time in 4 days. It was a test of character.
A test of strength.
(Functional fitness, baby!)
A test self-control.
(Oh how I would love to sit down on my cart and eat that entire bag of cranberries right there in the parking lot.)
I’ve been busy busy with pre-production for the video shoot but….
….there is always time to stop and smell the flowers.
(Even if they are at Home Depot and don’t smell.)
And time to play in the fabric store.
(Even if the fabric sheds enough to confuse me with an Afghan Hound.)
And time to workout.
(Even if it’s short and sweet.)
And time to laugh at a new gimmick.
(Even if I don’t eat sugar.)
Or do I?
You see New Year’s day of 2008 I decided to give up sugar. It’s a long story but the short version is sugar was controlling my life and I didn’t like it. It made me sad, overweight, and generally screwed with my overall wellbeing. The more I read of about sugar’s effects on the body the more I realized I didn’t want it in my life.
So for one year I “did it”. I gave it up. I didn’t eat any obvious refined sugar or “treats”, i.e. candy, cakes, cookies, ect. That year became two. My third year I decided I would start allowing myself to eat “treats” as long as they were homemade with unrefined sugar. This worked brilliantly for about a year and a half.
However, it has started to lead to an extra spoonful of honey or maple syrup here and there. However, the here and there has become here there here there here there here there.
I don’t like it.
So I’m going to do something about it.
Kick Start Kick the Sugar Challenge
I really enjoyed doing my “Fit(ter) for the Fourth” Challeng last month so I wanted to do another one. I love how I feel and how my body responds to a low sugar diet so this month is my 4 week Kick Start Kick the Sugar Challenge.
This month is going to be “no added sugars”. Which means no maple syrup, no honey, no molasses, and none of Brent’s homemade ice cream. I will keep eating fruit and drinking my water kefir and kombucha.
This week is really not the ideal time to start being a holiday and being up in the mountains for the shoot. I thought about putting it off but until when? I decided is never really an IDEAL time to start? There is will always be an excuse if you let it.
Feel free to join me. Or not. It’s very personal decision and certainly not an easy one for a sweet toothed lasses like myself.
Anyway, I know I said I was going to start a “How to I Make” series this week but it’s going to have to wait until after the video shoot.
Happy 4th of July!
Hugs and High Fives,
Jenn

Yeah I would also hear the siren call of agave, maple syrup, coconut crystals & other “natural sugars”…I don’t blame you for doing this challenge. Sadly, I won’t be joining you, and in fact, I will check those aerated chocolates to see if they have fewe calories- Woot!
You can do it though- you have more will power than anyone I know.
Good luck with the shoot!
Ps love your hair and you look so toned & fit in those Costco shots!
Awww thank you! I very much value self-discipline so your compliment means a lot to me!!!
Ha ha about the calorie counts on the chocolates. That didn’t even cross my mind!!!!!
xoxo
Woo, love Costco! And my mom and brother-in-law work for them, so thanks for supporting the fam. 😉
I went caffeine-free about 7 weeks ago, including any and all chocolate. It was for migraine relief, and seems to be helping (although admittedly I also went on a preventative med at the same time.) For now I think that will suffice, but I must say that I have been considering the general sugar issue myself. I must ponder! Good luck and thanks for being such an inspiration!
Oi. You’re killing me here. I was thinking about doing this and after my weekend with the family i really probably SHOULD….hm. Do I need to think about this? As you say, its never the ideal time….
I’ll have to get back to you. 😉
I did a no sugar added challenge awhile back–I felt SO good. I need to do it again. You have always been a role model to me when it comes to avoiding sugar. XOXO
I totally need to join you in this one! I’m the same way with sugar. I just came to the unfortunate realization about two weeks ago that even sugar-free products ramp up my hunger and cravings the same way sugar does. I’m going on 1 week of no sugar NOR any SF subs. NOt even my beloved stevia. And I’m sad to say it’s going really well. I mean I’m happy the cravings are gong away (finally) but sad to realize that I have to break up with all sweets.
hmmmm, i’m processing….. i’m thinking of my ‘plan’ for ‘phase ii’ & i’m thinkin’ sugar better be addressed. sigh.
😉 i love your inspiring blog posts!!
