Sometimes I regret choosing to film these kettlebell workout video series. It’s not often but sometimes I wonder, “What in the world was I thinking?” My head fills with doubts about my body, my ability, and my strength. Or it’s hard to find a perfect workout location or the weather is sweltering or freezing. You know, excuses.

But sometimes….

The location is perfect, right outside my front door. And at the foot of bad lands where wild horses roam free, I remember that I am enough as I am. I remember my strength lies not in how many pullups I can or cannot do but in my Creator who loves and guides me.

You Are Enough Kettlebell Workout

Part I

A. Kettlebell Seesaw Presses 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 (each arm)
B. Kettlebell Renegade Row 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 (each arm)
C. Kettlebell Single Leg Deadlift 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 (each leg)

Part II

Kettlebell Swings – 60, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10 (6 sets)

Complete A-B as a descending ladder. Once you finish one rep (each arm and leg) of each then move onto part II, the kettlebell swings. Rest as needed.

Note: It looks like I’m rounding my back during the swings in the video. While I do sometimes I have tendency to unpack my shoulders (I constantly have to remind myself to get them down and back), the vest is puffing out at the back. Don’t mistake that as a cue to round your back. Keep it flat with a natural curve!

Alright guys that’s it! I’m not sure what kettlebell workout number this is but I’m making progress through all 48 states and someday hopefully 50. Slowly but surely!

Have a wonderful weekend and remember you are enough just the way you are!

Hugs and High Fives,

I have one thing to say about last week.

Amazing.

We stayed on Antelope Island in the Great Salt Lake. Our friends who we met up with in Provo the week before, the ones we spent the winter with in Breckenridge, came with us. Not only that but my longtime internet friend, Janetha, who I met on a fitness forum before we both had blogs came for dinner.

Rather than tell you about my week, I’m going to show you. At least I’m going to show you the fitness-y parts. I do a lot more than exercise. I’ll save the details on bison, floating in the Great Salt Lake, and jackrabbits with ears as long as my arm for my adventure blog.

Our campsite was incredible. It was large and open and faced the Great Salt Lake making for the most stunning sunset workouts.

I did a few strength workouts and pulled out my heavy rope for the first time since last fall.

I’ve gotten so strong that I broke my rope into pieces. He he. (If you look closely- I know the photo is kinda small – you can see how the panorama app composited the rope into pieces.)

Brent and I also slipped away for a bike ride.

We started off on this trail which got progressively more rocky, so much so that we were walking and hauling our bikes over rocks more than we were riding. Biking is hard for me especially through rocks. I get really scared especially since my little brother almost died from a bike accident when I was a kid

So we found an easier trail. Much easier for me because while Brent went to the top of that moutain I sat on the side of the road.

We passed a heard of bison on the beach.

To add to an already beautiful week Janetha came to visit along with Marshall, the pups, and Momma B. I had actually met Janetha once before briefly before we left when she came to LA. Our meeting in LA was a short visit and their were a lot of people. I’m an introvert and prefer small groups so this was perfect.

I’ve met a lot of bloggers in person. Most of the time they are as nice in person as they are on their blog. Janetha is no exception. She is every bit as sweet in person as she is online and then some. As are Marshall and Momma B, who I’ve also known and interacted with online for a number of years. I actually did a Girl Heroes feature with Janetha and Momma B a few years ago. Not only is their transformation inspiring but so is their friendship. Wonderful wonderful people.

I was thrilled when she said they would bring the dogs.

I was secretly planning to kidnap Penny but once I met Randy (the basset) I decided I had to have them both but couldn’t figure how to keep them without Janetha and Marshall noticing. These two were ridiculously sweet and well behaved. They hung out with us inside our RV until 11 pm! Janetha and Marshall told us the funniest stories about Randy honking the horn and getting into food. Ornery fellow! My kind of dog!

We also ate dinner while watching the sunset.

A bison even decided to cruise by while we were eating!

Thank you so much for visiting Janetha, Marshall, Momma B, Penny, and Randy. It was such a treat! In case you haven’t read Janetha’s blog (you probably have she has quite the following) it’s called Meals and Moves. She wrote about our time together here.

Have you ever met an online friend in person? Any mountain bike tips?

Hugs and High Fives,

This is a kettlebell workout for the outdoors.

Or in the very least a kettlebell workout that shouldn’t be done on your wood or tiled floor because if you are like me you might drop the bell once. Or twice.

Regardless, this is a fun kettlebell workout. Not to mention quick kettlebell workout for those day you…well…don’t want to workout but know you probably should. You know those days.

Yeah, this kettlebell workout is for those days.

Anyway a quick word of caution: don’t fight the bell and pay attention. If you feel it slip let it go and get out of the way. The bell always wins. Always.

Tips: There is point at the top the swing where you feel the kettlebell “float”. This is where you catch it. Also you don’t need to transiotion between moves smoothly. It’s okay to stop the bell after the reach and then start your around the body. It’s also okay to set the bell back on the ground to start your swings after your around the body. You’ll be less likely to bang your knee. Lastly, I noticed near the end I was getting tired and I wasn’t dropping my hips during my squat and instead I was dropping my chest a little. This is easier but it’s also wrong. Be mindful of that.

We filmed this kettlebell workout at Sleeping Dunes National Lakeshore where we climbed the dunes.

It was spectacular.

My moody (now) teenager even enjoyed it. At least for a few minutes.

Well…that’s that. Have you ever dropped a kettlebell during your workout? What do you do when you are having one of those days? Have you done a kettlebell workout this week?

Hugs and High Fives,
Like most of my workouts, I try to always connect some number in the workout with the number of letters. Although there have been a few I was running low on creativity and just wanted to get done.

I’m particularly fond of this kettlebell workout for its versatility. Once you have the swing down it’s great for beginners through advanced. It can be easily modified by decreasing reps and/or sets or using a heavier kettlebell. It works well on its own when you don’t have a lot of time, as conditioning workout for non-strength days, or as a finisher on strength days.

B. KB Toss
80,70,60,50,40,30,10

Start with 80 reps (or whatever you think is a good number for YOU) and the next set reduce reps by 10 until you get to 10 reps of the swing and toss. Red lipstick and dark eyeliner are optional but highly recommended!*

*We were on our way to visit friends and going out that night so I changed in the car in the car to workout. However, I’ve done more ridiculous things like combine leopard heels and kettlebells.

I also want to say thank you to Jen for interviewing me in her Lady Lifter Spotlight last week. I interview a lot of women here on my blog so it was nice to be on the other side. Speaking of interviews would any of you like to be featured or have someone would you like to “nominate” as a Girl Hero? I’m always on the lookout for inspirational women. And inspirational does not mean “super buff” or someone who has lost a lot of weight. (Although that’s fine!) Girl Heroes are women who are doing their best to choose health in our not so healthy culture. Anyway you can email me if you are interested jenn (at) girl-heroes.com

I haven’t been blogging much over here because after Thing One asked me, “Do you think one day I’ll be nostalgic for this trip? For living in the RV?” I started to feel like I really need to catch up on capturing our adventures on my travel/family blog. It’s kinda embarrassing how far behind I am!!!! When we left I imagined being able to keep up on everything (and not be 6 months behind editing workouts!!) but the truth is I only have so much time and energy. My family and life come before the computer. If they didn’t I don’t think I’d have anything to write about or even be on this trip! Anyway, it’s really important to me to catch up on our travels before time starts to scratch away at those memories. Have you ever seen those blog to book things? They look like the yearbooks I got in high school. My desire is to turn our other blog, Newschool Nomads, into a “yearbook” that captures the memories and brief histories of all the places we have gone and give one to each of the boys when they leave our nest. Sniff. So I’m going to do my best to post a few times a week over here but for right now catching up on the memory book for my kids is my top priority.

Alright that’s it….I hope you enjoy this short kettlebell workout and let me know if you know someone (or YOU…don’t be shy!) who would make a good Girl Hero!

Hugs and High Fives,

Hi guys!

A quick post before we pack up move this morning. We spent a wonderful week in Rapid City, South Dakota. Some nomadic friends, who we got evacuated into a tunnel with during the 4th of July in Boston, met us here and we’ve been hanging out. The weather has been nearly perfect which made getting in my workouts much easier.

Monday was a rest day since the week before I finished my workouts on Sunday after taking a full week off.

Tuesday Brent and I did <del>last minute</del> evening workout. It was almost dark by the time we finished. I’m not looking forward to the time change!

Wednesday I did a few sad little sprints on this trail but it was something. I hadn’t sprinted in a long time and my calves were sore for days.

This sign was next to the trail were I was running. Comforting.

While I sprinted Brent defied gravity. He is the hottest <del>40 year old</del> guy I know!

Thursday I did another strength workout at our campsite.

Friday I rested.

Saturday Brent and I did another evening workout. The sky was so beautiful especially when you use an Instagram filter.

Sunday we filmed a conditioning workout for my state workout series. Do you recognize what is in the top right corner on the mountainside? Iconic, huh!

Speaking of workouts, I’m almost done editing another workout video that I plan on posting later this week. In the meantime, one of my kettlebell workouts was featured on Shape.com!

Alright that’s it. I got to pack up my house and hit the road!

Did you workout last week? And a ramdom question…do you have an Instagram? I loooove looking a people’s pictures on Instagram (here is my Instagram profile) as long as it’s not a constant stream of food and sweaty workout pictures. I don’t get that but it’s fun getting glimpses into people’s lives and the places they go whether it be a garage sale down the street or Paris.

Hugs and High Fives,
Jenn

We’ve been having a ton of fun visiting with my family. I just love being here and wish so much Indiana had mountains and an ocean like California. It’s hard living far away from family but now we live in an RV we regularly get to see friends and family all over the country.

Being with family does have it’s challenges, though. Like my dad’s sliders on King Hawaiian rolls. Or my mom’s pickle dip, a childhood favorite.

I’ll just say my food choices haven’t been something to brag about.

But let’s focus on the positive shall we…

Monday, Brent and I did a light strength based kettlebell workout together in my parent’s backyard. We finished with some <del>sprints</del> races.

These guys were our audience.

I intended to workout again on Wednesday but didn’t get to it until Thursday when I did medium strength based workout with lots of clean and presses, pull ups, push ups.

Friday, I did some conditioning with my Ultimate Sandbag.

I finished my workouts for the week Saturday with a heavy strength workout followed by some swings. Even though my parents have a nice home gym set up inside their house, I still find myself wanting to workout outside.

Sunday – Brent and I got up early to shoot my Vermont workout at the wild flower farm where we spent the night. I also started breaking in my new Vibram 5 Fingers. So far I have mixed feelings about the frog shoes.

Tuesday– This was my favorite workout location of the week. It was right behind our rv overlooking a lovely lake. Brent and I did a super short strength based workout. After two really hot days in New York it was wonderful to have a cool evening in Ohio.

Wednesday – We shot my Ohio workout in front of this covered bridge.

Friday – We made it to my parent’s house. I decided to workout in their basement. It was pure luxury working out in air conditioning without bugs! Unfortunately, in a middle of a push up I felt a lighting bolt of pain across my upper back. Ouch! I spent the rest of my workout foam rolling and stretching. At least, the floor was clean.

I haven’t worked out since Friday because of my stiff neck and back. I can tell it’s healing so today I’ll probably do something very light. Lately, I’ve been really inconsistent about warming up with mobility work. I’m certain this injury wouldn’t have happened had I taken the time to do a proper warm up. Ugh. It happens.

That’s it for last week’s workouts. I’m hoping to find time to edit a new kettlebell workout and have it posted later this week.

This week has been a blur. We have been in Washington D.C and I’ve been trying to pack in as much as possible every day. The boys and I have been getting up every morning (except one) to go into the city around 9 am and returning home around 9 pm. While visiting D.C. has made it fairly easy to get in my steps, it hasn’t left me much time for blogging or editing videos.

Or workouts.

I didn’t get in the three workouts I had planned last week. I’m a little disappointed in myself but all I can do is admit I didn’t make working out a priority last week. My priority has been seeing and learning as much as possible with the boys. I had planned to get up early and workout before we went into D.C. but it didn’t happen. When we got home after 12 hours in the city I was just too exhausted.

This week I’m going to shoot for one full body strength training workout.

One.

Impressive, right? Rather, than feeling disappointed when I don’t do what I say I’m going to do, I’m just deciding right now that one workout this week is enough. We are still in DC for a few more days and the workouts can wait. I workout consistently so two weeks of straying from my normal schedule isn’t going to hurt anything.

While I didn’t get in my strength training workouts this week I did ride my bike and walk.

Week Two 10,000 Steps a Day Results

5/8 – 14,518

5/9 – 14,035

5/10 – 3376

5/11 – 10,034

5/12 – 15,575

5/13 – 7904

5/14 – 10,444

On May 10, I only walked 3376 steps that day due to lack of discipline and planning on my part. I got up late and skipped my morning walk because the boys and I were meeting friends, another fulltime RVing family, we had met in Austin, TX. Traveling in an RV is such a trippy life. I love it!

On May 13, we were in the National Museum of Air and Space where it should have been easy to get 10,000 steps. However, I got an unexpected bad stomach ache and ended up sitting down for a large part of the afternoon. I was much more bummed to miss parts of the museum than I was not to get in my steps.

So I didn’t technically reach my goal of 10,000 steps every day but when I averaged out my steps I got 10,840 a day. It’s consistency that counts right!

I hope you are having a great week and do some kettlebell swings for me would you!

It’s all part of <del> being insane</del> the adventure.

As it turns out there was a lovely spot to workout on the levee at Algiers Point in New Orleans. We left a little early on our way to the WWII museum and I did my workout in front of the skyline of one of the most fun cities in America. Then I spent the rest of my dad walking around New Orleans in dirty workout clothes. Awesome. At least it’s better than wearing a dobok around Las Vegas.

Have you ever been to New Orleans? This was my first time and I love, LOVED, it. So did my boys. We actually ended up staying an extra day. You can read about all that we did here.

Now onto the workout!

Louisiana – Full Body Kettlebell Interval Circuit

1. Alternating Kettlebell Clean and Presses
2. Alternating Kettlebell Rows
3. Alternating Kettlebell Snatches
4. Left Single Leg Kettlebell Deadlifts
5. Right Single Leg Kettlebell Deadlifts
6. Kettlebell Toss
7. Lateral Lunges with Reach
8. Hot Potato Squat
9. Kettlebell Swings

I set my gymboss for 9 rounds of 45 seconds of work to 15 seconds of rest. Repeated 1-9 twice for a total os 18 mintues excluding warm up and stretching. I typically foam roll but not after this workout. I had beignets to go eat. Kidding. Sort of.

Here are some possible suggestions for a kettlebell beginner.
– Do 30/30 intervals instead.
– Omit the clean before the press and just hand off the bell between presses.
– Swap out swings for snatches.
–Straight Reaching Single Leg Deadlifts instead of SL kettlebell deadlifts
– Goblet squats instead of potato squats.

Alrighty, we are still in Florida but are headed to Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina. Anyone have any suggestions on what to do??? Or live there and want to hang out?

Hugs and High Fives,
Jenn

Hi guys! I hope you are doing well. I still haven’t found the time to edit my last workout video so I thought I’d talk about my current workout and eating habits. Because that’s exciting, right.

In my last post, I mentioned that living on the road in and of itself is challenge enough and I don’t need to add any more challenges to my life. I’m learning a entirely new way of life. I can’t go to the same grocery stores week to week. I gave away a number of appliances I used to use. Unlike California, the weather is unpredictable making it tough to workout. The RV is small so cooking meals and working out inside is challenging but certainly not impossible. Before we set out, I thought I would have lots of free time but the reality is I have very little. We do school in the morning and then explore in the afternoon. Sometimes we explore all day and then do school in the evening. We’ve also driven almost 8000 miles since we left in late October and, due to motion sickness, I can’t do much reading or writing during that time. Not to mention eating on driving days proves difficult with fast food always being a temptation. We’ve managed to eat very little fast food but I don’t care if I ever eat another turkey sandwich again. All this to say that I’ve had a number of things to adapt to and it took me a little longer than I expected.

I hope I don’t’ sound like I’m complaining. These are all “challenges” I’m more than happy to take on because I’m living one of my dreams. Yes, living on the road is a challenge but it’s also amazing. Amazing in the truest sense. But there are some facts to consider as I continue to learn and adapt to this new way of life.

Facts

Fact – I’m a sugar addict.

Fact – Sugar does nothing good for me. Not only is it related to a host of health problems it contributes to depression, a struggle of mine.

Fact – We are seeing hundreds of new places and trying the food is part of the experience. I don’t want to miss out. (Ahem…beignets in New Orleans.)

Fact – It’s important to me to support sustainable and healthful farming practices, i.e., grass fed meats, organic vegetables, local farms, ect.

Fact – I don’t want to go back to Ventura in a year or two (we are already considering doing year two) having gained a lot of weight. Some is fine but not a lot. I don’t have “skinny girl genes”. I don’t like the word skinny but you know what I mean. I have to be mindful of my food and exercise or I’ll end up overweight. I don’t want that.

Fact – I feel slightly self-conscious filming my videos. As you can see I’m NOT fat but I’m not as lean as I was. People can be really harsh and it makes me nervous especially on YouTube although I haven’t had anyone say anything mean yet.

Fact – This is a biggie. I have my RCK re-certification coming up in a few months. This means I have to re-pass all the certification requirements including the snatch test. The snatch test is 100 snatches in 5 minutes with the 12k (26.5 lb) kettlebell if I weigh less than 124 pounds. Otherwise, I have to use the 16K (35 lb) kettlebell. Since giving away my scale I have no idea what I weigh. I know it’s more than 124 but not sure by how much. (I don’t *think* it’s a lot) Which means I either have to lean out a bit or train to use the 16K but I have an injured shoulder right now. I don’t think it would be wise to use that much weight on my shoulder especially doing the explosive ballistic movements like the snatch.

Fact – I like feeling strong. It lifts my spirits and makes me appreciate my body on a deeper level despite its “imperfections”. Bottom line is being strong is good for me emotionally and physically and I’m not as strong as I was before we left.

My Solution

So considering all the “facts” of my life I have come up with a livable solution.

Food – We eat the majority of our meals at home so those meals will continue to be nourishing foods. I haven’t and don’t plan to buy any processed foods. I’ve been making an effort to get more local foods along the way and plan to keep doing. But I won’t think any less of myself for shopping at Walmart and buying non-organics. In many of the smaller towns this is the only option. We are not planning our trip around food, we are planning it around adventure, education, and experience. This means that sometimes Walmart is our only option and when we are out in about I want to experience the food including beignets in New Orleans.

Which leads me too…

Cafe Du Monde New Orleans

I’m not cutting out sugar completely. I started off the New Year planning to go back to the “no refined sugar” life style I lived for almost four years but realized that I would be too sad to miss out on beignets in New Orleans and Jeni’s Spledid Ice Cream in Nashville. I’m not going to eat or cook with refined sugar at home but when we get to Key West in a few weeks I’m going to eat a slice of Key Lime Pie.

For the last four years living in my sticks and bricks house, I’d estimate 80-90% of my food has been nourishing and the other 10-20% would nachos or other junk foods. (Let’s be honest, our bodies respond to most starches like they are sugar so it was more of a mental strategy than physical.) Allowing real sugar certainly makes it more challenging and the cravings afterwards are unbelievable. But I accept that is how my body will respond and I’ve been preparing myself mentally before I order that scoop of ice cream. I know if I eat it I will want more (and more and more) but just knowing and expecting this makes it easier to ride out the cravings however uncomfortable they are. It also helps me to be selective about what I eat and ask myself, “Is this going to be worth the cravings that will follow?” It’s not easy but, for now, it’s worth it and doable.

Fitness – We’ve finally got to warm sunny weather (Florida) and my sprits have lifted. I think I may have a touch of Seasonal Affective Disorder. Working out should be easier now. Although time is still an issue but it’s not an excuse. Brent and I started the Enter The Kettlebell program again. It consists of clean and press ladders 3 days a week using heavy, medium, and light days and two days of “kettlebell practice”. It’ simple, methodical, and effective plan for increasing strength. It also doesn’t take much time and can be done inside the RV if necessary. I followed it to prepare for my RKC almost two years ago. I’m modifying the plan slightly by using double kettlebells and the other two days I’m going to practice TRX or full body metabolic kettlebell workouts to film for my state workout series.

Enter the Kettlebell - Light Day

I’m still a little torn regarding my upcoming RKC recertification. I’m leaning towards leaning out rather than risk greater injury to my already injured shoulder. I’m trying to do turkish get ups to strengthen my tweaked shoulder but I really don’t see myself using a kettlebell heavier than the 12k for ballistic exercises soon enough to be able to pass. Which leaves me with the questions to buy a scale or not? I haven’t minded not having one and now that I’m adapting to this new way of life I think my body will naturally get to where it needs to be. I think. It would be terrible to show up for my re-certification and not pass because I was, unknowingly, a few pounds heavier.

So that’s that. Where I’ve been and where I’m at now. It feels good to have a flexible livable plan. I’ve already have 5 weeks of workouts planned, written out, and ready to check off. I found a nearby farmer’s market and a farm that sells grassed meats that we will go to later this week. It’s an adventure for sure and thanks for coming along!

Hugs and High Fives,
