I thought I was fit…

I thought I was fit and then I snowboarded.

I thought I was mentally stable and then I moved to the mountains in an RV for the winter.

We got up to the mountains last Wednesday evening.

Friday the boys and I went snowboarding. I only fell 10,000 times. The good news is I didn’t break anything.

My body felt like the egg that was in my pocket on my first day of snowboarding.

Saturday, I hurt. So. Bad. The only time I have been this sore was for my RKC certification.

Sunday, we woke up to frozen water pipes and ice on the inside of our windows and walls.

Ice on the INSIDE of our window.

You know how I talked about avoiding feeling overwhelmed. Well between being sore, single digit temperatures, having no water, and feeling trapped I had a meltdown. I’m starting to think I was idealizing spending the winter in the mountains in our RV and snowboarding. While Brent was outside in 3 degrees trying to thaw our fresh water tank I kept thinking, “We chose to do this?”

However, it isn’t just us who chose to do this. We are here with 3 other families we met on the road so at least we aren’t crazy alone. That is helping  so much.

Anyway, things have warmed up since the weekend (It’s in the 30s today!) and my spirits have started to lift little by little.

The campground even has a decent little fitness center. It’s been over a year since I’ve been in any sort of fitness facility.

I waited a few days to to adjust to the altitude but Monday I started working out and that has helped my mood tremendously.

I even wrote a flexible workout schedule.

Monday –  Full Body Kettlebell Workout and Walk (I’m still *trying* to get in my 10,ooo steps a day.
Tuesday – Snowboard
Wednesday – Full Body Kettlebell Workout and Walk
Thursday – Snowboard
Friday – Snowboard
Saturday – Full Body Kettlebell Workout and Walk
Sunday – Rest Day

One of the things I was concerned about up here was getting good food.  As it turns out the other families we are with are into real food as well. My friend, Clementine found a grocery delivery service, Door to Door Organics, so our little group formed a co-op. It’s amazingly easy. Shopping online and having groceries delivered to our RV? Yes, please. It’s also surprisingly affordable. It’s easier not to make impulse purchases when you are watching your total.

All of this organic or local food, including a pound of cheese, organic (GMO free) tortillas, organic sour cream, and 4 dozen cage free eggs, was less than $90. I’m going to have to buy a few things from the regular store but it’s going to be easy to keep our grocery budget around $150 or less a week.

I don’t personally drink much milk unless it’s raw but I love that this milk is from a local source and comes in glass bottles.

I’ll finish off with a few pictures from the week.

Meow Cow wants to board too.

At least I didn’t fall off the lift until I had to get off.

Getting ready to hit the slopes. Brent waits to put his helmet on. I wear mine in the car because I’m that cool.

Thing One

Thing Two

So that’s it.

Any of you snowboard? Please tell me it’s get’s easier! I’m working on cutting down our grocery budget but I find it really hard to feed a family of four real food for less than $150 dollars a week. Any tips?

Hugs and High Fives,
Jenn

Just a lurker, but I really enjoy reading your posts. Curious about which RV park you are staying in and if you’d recommend it? We have a big travel adventure planned for next year and I’m gathering information. Appreciate experienced advice!

Kudos to you for exercising and feeling bettter! But no amount of exercise would have helped me with frozen pipes! I would’ve totally melted down!
And I think you are doing excellent to feed a family of four with 2 growing boys for 150 dollars! I don’t know how you could go much lower unless y’all lived on rice, noodles and beans!

Thanks Missy! Guess what…now our heater is broken. Ugh. I’m not having a meltdown now so that’s good!

LOVE that exercise room. And very impressed with your snowboarding. I would be too scared that I’d kill myself or end up injured. The cold is no fun (but the workout room looks warm!!) and so cool about pooling your orders with that organic delivery service!!! Seriously, do you guys not have hot water bottles? It really does help.

Thanks Debs. I used to ski but decided I wanted to snowboard because knee injuries are less likely. Wish I could say the same about tailbone. 😉 Yikes!!! It’s super hard but SUPER fun!

Please tell me what to do with a hot water bottle?!?!?!? Is it like a regular water bottle with hot water? Do you hold it? Drink it? I know I sound a little dense but I’m really not sure what you mean!!!

Google hot water bottle. Harder to find in the u.s. easy in u.k. They are soft plastic ‘containers’ that u fill with hot water and cuddle. U can put them in ur bed to warm it up or just hold it against ur body. When I’m on laptop ill email u a link. I use mine daily in winter.

Love reading about your trip and (although I am sad for you) your freakouts. I often worry that I would never be able to have kids because I have anxiety. You’ve shown me that being a great mom doesn’t mean you always have it together emotionally – you demonstrate a ton of love for Thing 1 and Thing 2 and give me hope that I can be a great mom someday like you!

Awww thank you. I really appreciate it. I do my best and always make sure I communicate with my boys when I’m struggling and ALWAY let them know that they mean the world to me no matter how I’m feeling. They know they are loved deeply and that I would do anything for them…to me that is what matters the most. :-) Someday you will be an awesome mom!!!!

I want door-to-door organic food delivery! I don’t know how you feed your family for that little. I think I spend over $300 a month and it is just me living in my house. If you do the math, I’m spending….lots more than you. 😉

It gets better. Way better. Also? I love that you brought a hard boiled egg with you!

It’s really hard to spend $150. It’s usually more like $200 but I’m trying. This week we spent $160. You’ll be happy to know I brought TWO hardboiled eggs with me but only smashed the one. :-)

I love the pic of you and Brent!

What an amazing journey you are on! It feels like yesterday that we met for coffee, yet it’s been way over a year ago…

Glad you’ve found affordable, real food. It’s very hard to keep our grocery budget under control, and I really don’t have any advice. Lots of planning helps, but it’s hard to keep things interesting and affordable… I think you are doing great!

Stay warm! And I second Deb’s hot water bottle recommendation!
