4 Wheels of the Hero-mobile an Introduction

The week I’m doing a 4-part series on beginning a health quest.  I realize many of my regular readers are already on that road so please bear with me this week as I cover what you already know. Remember these are just my experiences please feel free to add your experiences and insights.

There is no one size fits all approach to health.

Girl Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. Girl Heroes workout in gyms, garages, living rooms, basements, and in parks. They are runners, figure competitors, gym rats, swimmers, cyclists, nutritionists, chefs, and women who simply choose to make health a priority. Some are vegetarians. Others are not.  Some find joy in yoga.  Others seek thrill in lifting iron.  Despite the differences Girl Heroes have one thing in common, they care about their health and the health of others.

Occasionally, I get emails from women asking me what I did to lose weight. I’ve also had people point out that my blog really isn’t all that organized (you should see my house). In an attempt to be more helpful and organized, I’ve put together this little four part guide for those just beginning their quest for health. It’s a general plan. A one size fits many approach. Some suggestions. Some things I’ve learned on my journey. Some stumbled upon coaching, if you will, for those of you who are waiting at the starting line. Take it with a grain of salt.

The 4 wheels of the Hero-mobile.

We are all on a journey and I like to think of our bodies as the cars to get us where we need to go. This is not profound, you’ve probably heard it before but the analogy works for me. There is so much to see and experience but to get where I want to go, I need to maintain and fuel my car. As with all my metaphors (or is it an analogy?) I take it a step further. The majority of cars have four wheels. Sure, there are some with three, motorcycles have two, and clowns ride unicycles but I want a car with at least four wheels. The four wheels gets me safely to places I need to go. Like the four wheels of a car, I believe there are four simple principles that, while not a guarantee, will take us far in our quest for health.

1. Food
2. Fitness
3. Rest
4. Gratitude

I said simple not easy because losing weight (if that’s your goal) and/or achieving health is really simple but depending on current habits not always easy. There are so many opinions and promises that it’s easy to get lost in the dazzle. For years, I prayed, hoped and searched for the “miracle”, “secret”,  or “perfect diet” only to find out it doesn’t exist.  Surprise. Like so many women, I wasted a lot of time meandering down windy roads to nowhere. My hope is that I’ll save someone, somewhere some time or frustration by sharing my experience.
