</p><p>This morning I spent some time reading some fitness/healthy living blogs of friends who I have &#8220;known&#8221; for the last 3-5 years of blogging. I have not done this regularly for <em>months and months</em>. It made me nostalgic in a strange way for the time when I read blogs and interacted with bloggers almost every day.</p>
<p>It also made me want to come here and post because blogging has almost always been a very fulfilling hobby.</p>
<p>As we approach our 48th state and near our two year anniversary on the road we are facing some big decisions and life changes. I&#8217;ve been so preoccupied with traveling and schooling (we homeschool year round) that I haven&#8217;t made much time for myself. My workouts have been sporadic, internet not always reliable, and I find myself reluctant to go online much of the time.</p>
<p>Then this morning I realized how much I missed this space.</p>
<p>So I&#8217;m dropping in to say hello. I haven&#8217;t forgotten the state kettlebell workout series. I plan to follow through with those even if it takes me another year to finish editing because it&#8217;s not good for my self-esteem to start something only to quit halfway through. Something I&#8217;ve been known to do more than once. <img src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/simple-smile.png" alt=":-)" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></p>
<p>Anyway all in well in my life. I&#8217;m enjoying my family more than I ever thought possible and while life on the road is challenging at times I can&#8217;t imagine having spent the last two years any other way.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m still doing yoga although it&#8217;s more like 5 times a week instead of every day like I had hoped. I&#8217;m also still working out with my kettlebells a few times a week with the intention of maintenance instead of pushing myself to be stronger, faster, or any other &#8220;more&#8221;. There is certainly a time and a place for that mentality but now is not the time for me. For a period of time working out was my life, or at least a huge part of it. Now it&#8217;s just something I do to live a more full life.</p>
<p><em>I workout to live not live to workout</em>.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve not been as good about taking pictures of workout locations lately but here are few of the food and fitness highlights from the last few weeks.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/IMG_2299.jpg"><img alt="IMG_2299" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/IMG_2299-300x400.jpg" width="300" height="400" /></a></p>
<p>We stocked up at another another farmer&#8217;s market.</p>

<a href='http://www.girl-heroes.com/2013/08/01/life-lately/img_2334/'><img width="150" height="150" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/IMG_2334-150x150.jpg" class="attachment-thumbnail" alt="IMG_2334" /></a>
<a href='http://www.girl-heroes.com/2013/08/01/life-lately/img_2329/'><img width="150" height="150" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/IMG_2329-150x150.jpg" class="attachment-thumbnail" alt="IMG_2329" /></a>
<a href='http://www.girl-heroes.com/2013/08/01/life-lately/img_2331/'><img width="150" height="150" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/IMG_2331-150x150.jpg" class="attachment-thumbnail" alt="IMG_2331" /></a>

<p>We picked over 8 pounds of organic raspberries and blueberries at the original Cascadian farms. The berries were $2.25 a pound! At that price, I will never be able to buy berries from a store again!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/IMG_2642.jpg"><img alt="IMG_2642" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/IMG_2642-500x375.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a></p>

<a href='http://www.girl-heroes.com/2013/08/01/life-lately/img_2671/'><img width="150" height="150" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/IMG_2671-150x150.jpg" class="attachment-thumbnail" alt="IMG_2671" /></a>
<a href='http://www.girl-heroes.com/2013/08/01/life-lately/img_2314/'><img width="150" height="150" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/IMG_2314-150x150.jpg" class="attachment-thumbnail" alt="IMG_2314" /></a>
<a href='http://www.girl-heroes.com/2013/08/01/life-lately/img_2303/'><img width="150" height="150" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/IMG_2303-150x150.jpg" class="attachment-thumbnail" alt="IMG_2303" /></a>

<p>There have been hikes in the Cascade National Park, Olympic National Park and the Hoh Rainforest which is part of Olympic NP.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Girl-Heroes-Pictures2.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-5619" alt="Girl-Heroes Pictures2" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Girl-Heroes-Pictures2-300x400.jpg" width="300" height="400" /></a></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>There was some yoga with Brent overlooking the Puget Sound.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/IMG_2627.jpg"><img alt="IMG_2627" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/IMG_2627-300x400.jpg" width="300" height="400" /></a></p>
<p>Just to keep it real there has been yoga in the RV because there were too many mosquitoes outside.</p>
<p><em><strong>What have you been up to lately?</strong></em></p>
<p>Hugs and High Fives,<br />

</p><p>Last week, Brent and I met an older couple while riding the lift. We came down the mountain and ended up on the same lift with the couple again. Our third run down the man said, &#8220;We&#8217;ll just ride up with you guys.&#8221;</p>
<p>We learned they spent half the year in <a href="http://www.newschoolnomads.com/2012/07/25/outer-banks/">the Outer Banks</a> where he works in the trades.</p>
<p>We learned they had two kids.</p>
<p>We learned about new runs we should try.</p>
<p><em>We learned they had started snowboarding together 15 years ago at the age of 50</em>.</p>
<p>Rad!</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-5324" alt="Brent and Jenn Snow Buddies" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Brent-and-Jenn-Snow-Buddies1-500x333.jpg" width="500" height="333" /></p>
<p><strong>That, my friends, is why I workout consistently. </strong></p>
<p>Sure a flat stomach is nice and strong shoulders look great in halter tops.</p>
<p><strong>But the older I get the less those things <em>really</em> matter.</strong></p>
<p>The people who inspire and motivate me the most are the people advancing in age who are hiking trails, snowboarding down mountains, running races, lifting some iron, and living life.</p>
<p>Once I read about a woman who died from getting thrown off a horse&#8230;</p>
<h2><strong>at 102.</strong></h2>
<p>For over 10 years that article of the elderly cowgirl has stuck with me.</p>
<p>God willing, that&#8217;s how I want to go. I don&#8217;t want to break a hip falling down the stairs.</p>
<p>I want to be thrown off the back of an Arabian (That&#8217;s my favorite breed and what I rode when I was younger.) while riding through the mountains.</p>
<p>Not to go all Bible on you but I&#8217;ve said before I&#8217;m a little Jesus flavored. <img src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/simple-smile.png" alt=":-)" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></p>
<p><em>2 Timothy 4:7 &#8211; &#8220;I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.&#8221;</em></p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-5320" alt="Girl Running on Dunes MI" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Girl-Running-on-Dunes-MI-500x333.jpg" width="500" height="333" /></p>
<p><strong>I want to age gracefully but not passively. </strong></p>
<p>I want to keep running figuratively and literally.</p>
<p>The only chance I have of being able to be <em>literally</em> finish running or be gloriously thrown off a horse at 102 is to eat real nutrient dense food and maintain my strength.</p>
<p><em>Eat real food.</em></p>
<p>and</p>
<p><em>Lift.</em></p>
<p><em> Lift your body. Lift iron. Lift big bags of dog food.</em></p>
<p><em>Just lift.</em></p>
<p><em> Lift heavy. Lift consistently.</em></p>
<p>Snowboarding, hiking, running, dancing, tennis, golf, or whatever activities you enjoy&#8230;they are all wonderful but they are all <em>second to strength</em>.</p>
<p><em><strong>Strength is the foundation of every healthy body.</strong></em></p>
<p>With that here are my workouts of last week. There was fresh powder a few days so my schedule was off. I&#8217;m also doing an upper lower body splits  after months and months of full body workouts. I still love (and prefer) full body workouts but I needed a change and my legs need a bit more rest since I&#8217;m snowboarding so much.</p>
<p style="text-align: left; padding-left: 30px;">Monday &#8211; Rest<br />
Tuesday &#8211; Strength Training &#8211; Upper Body Focus<br />
Wednesday &#8211; Strength Training &#8211; Lower Body Focus<br />
Thursday &#8211; Snowboard<br />
Friday &#8211; Strength Training &#8211; Upper Body Focus<br />
Saturday &#8211; Snowboard<br />
Sunday &#8211; Snowboard (This was probably my best day so far. There was powder and I hit more black runs that day than any other day!)</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">I also walked every day. My lowest step day was 4,478 and my highest was 13,914 so I&#8217;m still on track for meeting my 3,000,000 step goal for 2013.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>So how was your week? Why do you workout? Who motivates you?</strong></p>
<p>Hugs and High Fives,<br />
Jenn</p>

<p>I thought I was mentally stable and then I moved to the mountains in an RV for the winter.</p>
<p>We got up to the mountains last Wednesday evening.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-5049" title="My Crew Snowboarding" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/My-Crew-Snowboarding-400x400.jpg" alt="" width="400" height="400" /></p>
<p>Friday the boys and I went snowboarding. I only fell 10,000 times. The good news is I didn&#8217;t break anything.</p>
<div id="attachment_5051" style="width: 310px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img class="size-medium wp-image-5051" title="Smashed Egg" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Smashed-Egg-300x400.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="400" /><p class="wp-caption-text">My body felt like the egg that was in my pocket on my first day of snowboarding.</p></div>
<p>Saturday, I hurt. So. Bad. The only time I have been this sore was for <a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/2010/09/02/a-beauty-or-a-beast-my-rkc-experience/" target="_blank">my RKC certification</a>.</p>
<p>Sunday, we woke up to frozen water pipes and ice on the inside of our windows and walls.</p>
<div style="width: 410px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img title="Ice on RV windows" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Ice-on-RV-windows-400x400.jpg" alt="" width="400" height="400" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Ice on the INSIDE of our window.</p></div>
<p>You know how <a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/2012/12/04/ten-ways-to-avoid-feeling-overwhelmed-by-life/" target="_blank">I talked about avoiding feeling overwhelmed</a>. Well between being sore, single digit temperatures, having no water, and feeling trapped I had a meltdown. I&#8217;m starting to think I was idealizing spending the winter in the mountains in our RV and snowboarding. While Brent was outside in 3 degrees trying to thaw our fresh water tank I kept thinking, &#8220;We <em>chose</em> to do this?&#8221;</p>
<p>However, it isn&#8217;t just us who chose to do this. We are here with 3 other families we met on the road so at least we aren&#8217;t crazy alone. That is helping  so much.</p>
<p>Anyway, things have warmed up since the weekend (It&#8217;s in the 30s today!) and my spirits have started to lift little by little.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-5043" title="Fitness Room Campground" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Fitness-Room-Campground-300x400.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="400" /></p>
<p>The campground even has a decent little fitness center. It&#8217;s been over a year since I&#8217;ve been in any sort of fitness facility.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-5042" title="Exercising in High Elevation" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Exercising-in-High-Elevation-300x400.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="400" /></p>
<p>I waited a few days to to adjust to the altitude but Monday I started working out and that has helped my mood tremendously.</p>
<p>I even wrote a flexible workout schedule.</p>
<p>Monday &#8211;  Full Body Kettlebell Workout and Walk (I&#8217;m still *trying* to get in my 10,ooo steps a day.<br />
Tuesday &#8211; Snowboard<br />
Wednesday &#8211; Full Body Kettlebell Workout and Walk<br />
Thursday &#8211; Snowboard<br />
Friday &#8211; Snowboard<br />
Saturday &#8211; Full Body Kettlebell Workout and Walk<br />
<span style="font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;">Sunday &#8211; Rest Day </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;">One of the things I was concerned about up here was getting good food.  As it turns out the other families we are with are into real food as well. My friend, Clementine found a grocery delivery service, <a href="https://www.doortodoororganics.com/" target="_blank">Door to Door Organics</a>, so our little group formed a co-op. It&#8217;s amazingly easy. Shopping online and having groceries delivered to our RV? Yes, please. It&#8217;s also surprisingly affordable. It&#8217;s easier not to make impulse purchases when you are watching your total.</span></p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-5053" title="IMG_6507" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/IMG_6507-500x333.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="333" /></p>
<p>All of this organic or local food, including a pound of cheese, organic (GMO free) tortillas, organic sour cream, and 4 dozen cage free eggs, was less than $90. I&#8217;m going to have to buy a few things from the regular store but it&#8217;s going to be easy to keep our grocery budget around $150 or less a week.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-5052" title="IMG_6514" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/IMG_6514-500x333.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="333" /></p>
<p>I don&#8217;t personally drink much milk unless it&#8217;s raw but I love that this milk is from a local source and comes in glass bottles.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll finish off with a few pictures from the week.</p>
<div id="attachment_5048" style="width: 410px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img class="size-medium wp-image-5048" title="Meow Cow Snowboarding" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Meow-Cow-Snowboarding-400x400.jpg" alt="" width="400" height="400" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Meow Cow wants to board too.</p></div>

<div id="attachment_5045" style="width: 310px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img class="size-medium wp-image-5045" title="Jenn and Brent getting ready to snowboard" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Jenn-and-Brent-getting-ready-to-snowboard-300x400.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="400" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Getting ready to hit the slopes. Brent waits to put his helmet on. I wear mine in the car because I&#8217;m that cool.</p></div>
<div id="attachment_5046" style="width: 410px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img class="size-medium wp-image-5046" title="Thing One snowboarding" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Thing-One-snowboarding-400x400.jpg" alt="" width="400" height="400" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Thing One</p></div>
<div id="attachment_5047" style="width: 410px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img class="size-medium wp-image-5047" title="Thing Two Snowboarding" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Thing-Two-Snowboarding-400x400.jpg" alt="" width="400" height="400" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Thing Two</p></div>
<p>So that&#8217;s it.</p>
<p><em>Any of you snowboard? Please tell me it&#8217;s get&#8217;s easier! I&#8217;m working on cutting down our grocery budget but I find it really hard to feed a family of four real food for less than $150 dollars a week. Any tips?</em></p>

</p><p>Earlier this week Thing Two and I headed out to explore the local food options in Rapid City, South Dakota. Thing One stayed home with Brent because he wanted to <a href="http://www.newschoolnomads.com/2012/03/13/letters-to-nico/" target="_blank">practice his piano</a>.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4903" title="Rapid City Farmers Market" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Rapid-City-Farmers-Market-500x333.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="333" /></p>
<p>Our first stop was the farmers market where we bought some of our fruits and vegetables for the week.</p>
<p><img title="Rapid City SD Farmers Market" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Rapid-City-SD-Farmers-Market-500x333.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="333" /></p>
<p>I was happy to find a vendor selling whole free range chickens for $8 a chicken.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4902" title="Breadrood Co-op Rapid City SD" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Breadrood-Co-op-Rapid-City-SD-500x375.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p>We also stopped at Breadroot Natural Foods Co-op.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4900" title="Breadroot Natural Food Co-op SD" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Breadroot-Natural-Food-Co-op-SD-300x400.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="400" /></p>
<p>They had a large selection of bulk items.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4901" title="Sprout Your Own Seeds" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Sprout-Your-Own-Seeds-300x400.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="400" /></p>
<p>I saw some directions for sprouting your own seeds. I&#8217;ve been wanting to do this for a long time so I picked up some alfalfa seeds.</p>
<p>After the co-op we stopped at Safeway to pick up the last few things we needed but couldn&#8217;t find at the co-op or market.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4897" title="Rapid City Farmers Market Vegetables" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Rapid-City-Farmers-Market-Vegetables-266x400.jpg" alt="" width="266" height="400" /></p>
<p>We came home and laid out our bounty just<a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/2011/06/21/totally-awesome-tuesdays/" target="_blank"> like the old days when I lived in a house</a> without wheels. (I just got a little homesick reading that old post. I can&#8217;t believe our family has been on the road for almost a year!)</p>
<p>Anyway the bounty included quinoa, oats, black beans, red beans, pinto beans, lentils, unsweetened coconut flakes, alfalfa seeds, raw honey, pears, peppers, cucumbers, apples, heirloom tomatoes, and a melon.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4896" title="Rapid City Farmers Market Bounty" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Rapid-City-Farmers-Market-Bounty-500x333.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="333" /></p>
<p>I was most excited about the green tomatoes! We made <a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/2012/08/22/grain-and-gluten-free-fried-green-tomatoes/" target="_blank">fried green tomatoes</a> last night and I&#8217;m looking forward to eating the leftovers with scrambled eggs this morning.</p>
<p><img title="Organic Grass Fed Hots and Free Range Chickens" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Organic-Grass-Fed-Hots-and-Free-Range-Chickens-500x333.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="333" /></p>
<p>Coming in at a close second were the organic beef hot dogs on sale for $3 a package at the co-op. I know I know, even organic-grass-fed-blessed-by-the-pope hot dogs aren&#8217;t really &#8220;<em>healthy</em>&#8221; but you know what? They taste good! <img src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/simple-smile.png" alt=":-)" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4895" title="Alfalfa Seeds Sprouting Lid" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Alfalfa-Seeds-Sprouting-Lid--500x333.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="333" /></p>
<p>I got this mason jar lid strainer to make the sprouting easier. Since we are coming into winter and finding good produce isn&#8217;t always an option I thought I&#8217;d give sprouting a try.</p>
<p><em><strong>Has anyone sprouted seeds before? Any advice?</strong></em></p>
<p>Hugs and High Fives,<br />

<p>It&#8217;s been fun finding local food. We&#8217;ve been to farmers markets and farm stands from Maine to Indiana.</p>
<p><img title="Lobster Maine" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Lobster-Maine-266x400.jpg" alt="" width="266" height="400" /></p>
<p>It was easy to find fresh local protein in Maine.</p>
<p><img title="Brent and Jenn Lobsters Maine" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Brent-and-Jenn-Lobsters-Maine-500x333.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="333" /></p>
<p>Our first whole lobster experience.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4726" title="Thing 2 Lobster Maine" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Thing-2-Lobster-Maine-266x400.jpg" alt="" width="266" height="400" /></p>
<p>Thing Two enjoyed it.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4730" title="Blueberries Maine" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Blueberries-Maine-300x400.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="400" /></p>
<p>In Maine, we also picked wild blueberries. Check out the difference between the wild blueberries on the right from Trader Joe&#8217;s blueberries on the left. Hmmmmm&#8230;..</p>
<p><img title="Crepes VT" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Crepes-VT-400x400.jpg" alt="" width="400" height="400" /></p>
<p>I was sticking to and enjoying my 30 day paleo challenge until we stopped at the Skinny Pancake in Montpelier, Vermont around day 21.</p>
<p>I really didn&#8217;t want to order a salad. &#8220;I would never be back here again.&#8221;</p>
<p>So I decided, &#8220;screw it&#8221; and ordered a &#8220;garlique chic&#8221;  crepe and I would get back to the challenge after dinner.</p>
<p>Simple. As. That.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4724" title="Ben and Jerrys VT" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Ben-and-Jerrys-VT-400x400.jpg" alt="" width="400" height="400" /></p>
<p>Except it wasn&#8217;t that simple because we stopped at the Ben and Jerry&#8217;s Factory and I saw the Coconut 7 Layer Bar ice cream.</p>
<p>&#8220;When would I ever be back to the Ben and Jerry&#8217;s Factory?&#8221;</p>
<p>So I ordered it and and enjoyed every bite.</p>
<p>I blame Vermont.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4760" title="Roadside Stand New York" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Roadside-Stand-New-York-500x333.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="333" /></p>
<p>There were still few days left of the challenge and I decided to keep on despite my day of indulgence.</p>
<p>We ate well even though there was sometimes lack of selection. We stopped at small roadside stands for fresh produce.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4722" title="Golden Dawn Grocery OH" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Golden-Dawn-Grocery-OH-500x375.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p>And small local grocery stores&#8230;</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4723" title="Bear in the Deli OH" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Bear-in-the-Deli-OH-300x400.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="400" /></p>
<p>&#8230;with bears in the deli.</p>
<p>Then we got to Indiana and my 30 days were up.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4750" title="Cream Butter with a little Chicken IN" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Cream-Butter-with-a-little-Chicken-IN-300x400.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="400" /></p>
<p>Instead of testing each eliminated food group for four days like the plan <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1936608898/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1936608898&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=newscnomad-20">It Starts with Food: Discover the Whole30 and Change Your Life in Unexpected Ways</a><img style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=newscnomad-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1936608898" alt="" width="1" height="1" border="0" /> instructs. I decided to enjoy myself.</p>
<p>Rather too much.</p>

<p>There have been bbq&#8217;s at home&#8230;</p>

<p>&#8230;and fun nights out with my family.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4746" title="Jenn Picking at the Orchard IN" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Jenn-Picking-at-the-Orchard-IN-300x400.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="400" /></p>
<p>I didn&#8217;t throw it all out the window. We still went to farmers markets and picked apples from an orchard.</p>
<p><img title="Trader Joes Indiana" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Trader-Joes-Indiana1-300x400.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="400" /></p>
<p>Had a date night at Trader Joe&#8217;s.</p>

<p>Last week, I got in a few workouts</p>
<p><img title="Liddy Kisses and Kettlebells IN" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Liddy-Kisses-and-Kettlebells-IN-300x400.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="400" /></p>
<p>and some kisses with kettlebells.</p>
<p>But I haven&#8217;t been &#8220;perfect&#8221; and that&#8217;s okay. Perfection is overrated. Or so I have heard.</p>
<p>I had my fair share of fun food while visiting my family but I&#8217;m ready to get back to real food or clean eating or whatever you want to call it.</p>
<p><img title="Local Beef in the RV Freezer" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Local-Beef-in-the-RV-Freezer-500x373.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="373" /></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Here is our freezer as of this morning. It&#8217;s stocked with as much local beef and organic chicken that will fit and our fridge is full of lots of produce.</p>
<p>I want to do a complete review of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1936608898/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1936608898&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=newscnomad-20">It Starts with Food: Discover the Whole30 and Change Your Life in Unexpected Ways</a><img style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=newscnomad-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1936608898" alt="" width="1" height="1" border="0" /> but this post is already on the long side. I&#8217;ll try to get around to it in the next week or two but for now I&#8217;ll say one thing.</p>
<p>Feta.</p>
<p>Thirty days without feta is no fun.</p>
<p>Hugs and High Fives,<br />

<h1>Thought One &#8211; <strong>Life is Like Berries.</strong></h1>
<p>Two weeks ago after a busy week in NYC followed by a fulltime family RV rally, we decided we needed a few days up in the mountains to unwind. Nearby there was a local farm with pick your own raspberries. Thing Two and I spent an afternoon picking and chatting. If you know me well you know I think in metaphors. It may be strange to some but I find symbolism in everything and have since I was a child. Finding connections in the world is how I cope with life. Not to go all spiritual on you but it is one of the ways God speaks His peace into my crazy mind.</p>
<p>Anyway as we were picking berries I kept thinking about how much life is like picking berries. At first glance the bushes are large and overwhelming. You look down at your empty basket and at the rows of bushes and wonder, &#8220;It&#8217;s going to take forever to fill this thing.&#8221;</p>
<p>Looking at the bushes as a whole, it&#8217;s hard to see the berries but once you squat down and start looking you&#8217;ll find berries. A few are stand up on the bushes proudly displaying their perfect ripeness. However, most of the berries are in a various other states. Some are half eaten. Some are still green. Some are dead on the ground. Some lovely ones have fallen and are waiting to be picked up. It seems the majority are beautiful plump berries hiding behind leaves. These berries take a little more time and a little more effort to find but they are so worth it.</p>
<p>As Thing One delighted in doing something &#8220;old fashioned&#8221;—He once said he&#8217;s &#8220;just an old fashioned boy in a futuristic family.&#8221;—I carried on, one berry at a time, reminding myself it&#8217;s not honest to eat your weight in berries before you pay for them. It wasn&#8217;t too long before I looked down and saw that our baskets were nearly full.</p>
<p>They didn&#8217;t get full by magic. They were filled one berry at a time.</p>
<p>Just like life.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Natural-Dessert.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-4575" title="Natural Dessert" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Natural-Dessert.jpg" alt="" width="504" height="337" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Healthy-Dessert.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-4574" title="Healthy Dessert" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Healthy-Dessert.jpg" alt="" width="504" height="337" /></a></p>
<h1>Thought Two &#8211; A Healthy Dessert</h1>
<p>We came home with <del>three</del> two pounds (Ahem) of fresh raspberries. My favorite way to eat them was in a half of cup of whole milk (cream would have been ideal) with a tsp of maple syrup.</p>
<p>Divine.</p>
<p>Whole milk (I never buy that low fat white water called &#8220;milk&#8221;.) with a bit of maple syrup has been on of my favorite treats for years. I often get surprised looks when I tell people as if maple syrup isn&#8217;t good for anything but pancakes. A cup of milk (I prefer raw) with a small spoon of maple has been one of my favorite treats for years.</p>
<h1>Thought Three &#8211; 30 Days of Paleo</h1>
<p><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1936608898/ref=as_li_ss_il?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1936608898&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=newscnomad-20"><img src="http://ws.assoc-amazon.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&amp;ASIN=1936608898&amp;Format=_SL110_&amp;ID=AsinImage&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;WS=1&amp;tag=newscnomad-20" alt="" border="0" /></a><img style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=newscnomad-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1936608898" alt="" width="1" height="1" border="0" /><br />
Milk and maple syrup are not paleo.</p>
<p>So what about this 30 days of paleo?</p>
<p>First of all I have no intentions of ever becoming Wilma Flintsone. I believe paleo is a healthy way to eat but I doubt I will give up cheese or maple syrup despite what some say it may be doing to my body.</p>
<p>My <a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/2011/07/29/nourish/" target="_blank">favorite food philosophy</a> comes is the traditional food way of eating made popular by Weston A. Price.</p>
<p>Although that is my favorite way of eating, it doesn&#8217;t been I follow it all the time. The first four months of living in an RV were crazy. I <a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/2011/12/04/hard-to-balance/" target="_blank">started eating refined sugar for the first time in almost four years</a> and I ate more Taco Bell than I&#8217;d like to admit. I have 10 extra pounds to prove it. But that&#8217;s okay because learning how to live in a 320 square foot space was all I could handle at the time.</p>
<p>A few months ago we finally <a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/2012/05/30/eating-healthy-on-the-road/" target="_blank">settled into our new nomadic life</a> and I starting making the effort to find farmers markets and good food again. Taco Bell lost it&#8217;s appeal. Mostly.</p>
<p>But I still struggled with sugar.</p>
<p>One of the things that always helps me is reading about nutrition. A few months ago I read <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1609611543/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1609611543&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=newscnomad-20">Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight, and Find Your Path Back to Health</a><img style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=newscnomad-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1609611543" alt="" width="1" height="1" border="0" />but since I already don&#8217;t eat a lot of grains, (I started experimenting with <a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/2009/05/06/grains-the-holy-grail/" target="_blank">grain elimination three years ago</a>.) It didn&#8217;t really hold my interest.</p>
<p>Two weeks ago I ordered <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1936608898/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1936608898&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=newscnomad-20">It Starts with Food: Discover the Whole30 and Change Your Life in Unexpected Ways</a> by Dallas and Melissa Hartwig. (Both are RKCs which I find cool.) I skipped right to the 30 day plan and started it with Brent. I&#8217;ve been making my way through the rest of the book. So far I&#8217;m enjoying it and will give a full review when I finish the 30 days.</p>
<p>For 30 days I&#8217;m not eating dairy, grains, legumes, some oils, and SUGAR. Aside from a few sips of of an experimental pumpkin maple smoothie I was making my kids I haven&#8217;t had a bite of sugar natural or refined for 13 days.</p>
<p>I feel amazing. My energy is level is back to consistent and my mood is up.</p>
<p>Now I just need to start sleeping 8 hours a night.</p>
<p>It feels good to be finding my old new self even if it means I&#8217;m going to skip out on the ice cream at the Ben and Jerry&#8217;s factory in Vermont.</p>
<p>Hugs and High Fives,<br />
Jenn</p>

<p><a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/2011/12/19/rough-drafts/" target="_blank">Eating healthy on the road</a> was a different story. We quickly left the year round growing climate of southern CA. Our RV kitchen is micro-sized compared to house kitchen. It was sometimes a challenge to find a grocery store much less one that stocked the products we really wanted. We had a <a href="http://www.newschoolnomads.com/2011/11/20/day-19-pit-stop/" target="_blank">few events that strained our budget</a>.</p>
<p>But we kept on and decided we would just do our best to eat a real food diet and not beat ourselves up over the occasional fast food stop.</p>

<p>Seven months later, I can confidently say we have finally adjusted to finding real food on the road. It&#8217;s a combination of feeling more comfortable living in a small space, making an effort, and, I&#8217;m sure, the warmer weather.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ve not only adjusted but finding farmers markets has become an adventure we enjoy. Multiple times we&#8217;ve visited small towns like Port Royal, South Carolina, that we would have otherwise skipped had I not taken the time to seek out a farmers market on <a href="http://www.localharvest.org/" target="_blank">Local Harvest</a>. More importantly, we&#8217;ve met great people we wouldn&#8217;t have met otherwise.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Michael-from-Mibek-Farms-SC1.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4507" title="Michael from Mibek Farms SC" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Michael-from-Mibek-Farms-SC1-200x300.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="300" /></a></p>
<p>People like Michael from <a href="http://www.mibekfarms.com/" target="_blank">Mibek Farms</a>. Their beef was fantastic!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Brent-trying-and-oyster-for-the-first-time-SC1.jpg"><img title="Brent trying and oyster for the first time SC" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Brent-trying-and-oyster-for-the-first-time-SC1-300x200.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="200" /></a></p>
<p>Michael told us about his pastured raised beef farm and insisted we try our first raw oysters. Yum. I think.</p>
<p>Every time we come across grassfed local beef, I stock up with as much as I can fit in our little RV freezer. My boys love tacos and hamburgers but ground beef is one the things I have a really hard time buying unless it&#8217;s grassfed and blessed by the pope.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Beef-from-Tudor-Hall-Farm-WV.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4514" title="Beef from Tudor Hall Farm WV" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Beef-from-Tudor-Hall-Farm-WV-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a></p>
<p>Our freezer after stocking up on beef from <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Tudor-Hall-Farm-Market/10150129880825543" target="_blank">Tudor Hall Farm</a> who was at a <a href="http://www.facebook.com/ShepherdstownFarmersMarket" target="_blank">little farmers market we just happened upon in Sherpherdstown</a>, West Virgina. (This beef will last us about 5 weeks.)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Krissy-from-Blueberry-Hill-Farm1.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4515" title="Krissy from Blueberry Hill Farm" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Krissy-from-Blueberry-Hill-Farm1-225x300.jpg" alt="" width="225" height="300" /></a></p>
<p>At Shepherdstown farmers market, we also met lovely Krissy from <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Blueberry-Hill-Vegetables/113014225389253" target="_blank">Blueberry Hill Vegetables</a>, a certified organic farm. I found this cool article about their <a href="http://www.capitalcommunitynews.com/CCN_Website09/images/papers/HR/Aug/0809/pdfs/116-117_RAG_0809.pdf" target="_blank">life as small local farmers</a>.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Shrimp-from-Highway-21-Seafood-SC1.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4511" title="Shrimp from Highway 21 Seafood SC" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Shrimp-from-Highway-21-Seafood-SC1-300x200.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="200" /></a></p>
<p>We&#8217;ve bought seafood from roadside stands.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Thing-2-fishing.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4513" title="Thing 2 fishing" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Thing-2-fishing-300x199.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="199" /></a></p>
<p>And at the urging of a particular 9 year old&#8230;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/REALLY-local-fish.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4512" title="REALLY local fish" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/REALLY-local-fish-300x200.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="200" /></a></p>
<p>&#8230;we have gotten adveturous with some <em>really</em> local catch.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Trader-Joes-in-Chapel-Hill-NC1.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4509" title="Trader Joes in Chapel Hill NC" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Trader-Joes-in-Chapel-Hill-NC1-225x300.jpg" alt="" width="225" height="300" /></a></p>
<p>We&#8217;ve also been able to find Trader Joes in North Carolina and Virginia to stock up on some of our favorites.</p>
<p>And some places we are just out of luck&#8230;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Natural-and-Organic-Foods-Hmmmm.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4520" title="Natural and Organic Foods? Hmmmm" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Natural-and-Organic-Foods-Hmmmm-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a></p>
<p>&#8220;Natural and Organic Products&#8221;? Hmmmmm.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Water-Kefir-Brewing.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4516" title="Water Kefir Brewing" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Water-Kefir-Brewing-199x300.jpg" alt="" width="199" height="300" /></a></p>
<p>I&#8217;ve maintained brewing my <a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/2012/04/06/water-kefir-how-to-make-the-healthy-soda-alternative/" target="_blank">water kefir</a> and <a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/2011/07/14/how-to-how-i-make-kombucha-tea/" target="_blank">kombucha</a>. Pretty soon I&#8217;m hoping to add in sprouting and someday I&#8217;m going to get brave enough to make sourdough. Or not.</p>
<p>That doesn&#8217;t mean we haven&#8217;t chosen to enjoy some local favorites like<a href="http://www.newschoolnomads.com/2012/03/07/new-memories-in-new-orleans/" target="_blank"> beignets in New Orleans</a> or&#8230;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Fried-Green-Tomatoes-Charleston-SC.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4517" title="Fried Green Tomatoes Charleston SC" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Fried-Green-Tomatoes-Charleston-SC-300x200.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="200" /></a></p>
<p>other less than healthy foods like fried green tomatoes. Oh my goodness who would have thought these were so good!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Shrimp-and-Grits-Charleston-SC.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4518" title="Shrimp and Grits Charleston SC" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Shrimp-and-Grits-Charleston-SC-300x200.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="200" /></a></p>
<p>I had to try, shrimp and grits, a low country favorite.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Jestines-Okra-Charleston-SC.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4519" title="Jestine's Okra Charleston SC" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Jestines-Okra-Charleston-SC-300x200.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="200" /></a></p>
<p>While I was at it, why not some (You see that flawed logic there <img src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/simple-smile.png" alt=":-)" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> ) fried okra, green bean casserole, and macaroni and cheese. BTW, I can eat <em>a lot</em> but Brent and I did share this.</p>
<p>While I&#8217;m sharing some of my less than healthy choices I may as well let you know I&#8217;m still struggling with <a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/2011/12/04/hard-to-balance/" target="_blank">my sugar addiction</a>. It deserves a post of its own. I&#8217;ll just say that choosing to eat sugar again was not good choice at all.</p>

</p><p><strong>Tuesdays</strong> are one of my favorite days.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Apricots.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3769" title="Apricots" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Apricots-300x200.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="200" /></a></p>
<p><strong>Tuesday </strong>mornings I pick up my CSA produce box and my raw milk. After I get my produce box I <del datetime="2011-06-22T04:19:06+00:00">lovingly lay it out on my table and take a million pictures from every angle as if I have never seen a piece of fruit before</del> plan my menu for the week based on what&#8217;s in the box and what I already have in my cupboards and freezer.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3767" title="CSA bounty" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/CSA-bounty-300x200.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="200" /></p>
<p>Maple grilled stone fruit and chicken? Squash casserole?  Fajitas with apricots? A roast with carrots and potatoes? I have lots of ideas floating around in my head inspired by this week&#8217;s box.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Lavender-tbs.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3761" title="Lavender tbs" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Lavender-tbs-300x200.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="200" /></a></p>
<p>Last week we got lavender and I made <em>lavender mushroom chicken</em>.  It was&#8230;umm&#8230;different.  Not necessarily <em>bad</em> but it did sort of taste like it might have been marinated in bodywash.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Noah-Lettuce.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3768" title="Noah Lettuce" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Noah-Lettuce-300x200.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="200" /></a></p>
<p>I also suspect a lot of salads this week.</p>
<p>One <strong>Tuesday</strong> evening a month, I go wait in my car in a neighborhood for a semi-truck to arrive from Oregon. Then we (the truck doesn&#8217;t just come for me) unload and disperse everyone&#8217;s orders of raw cheeses, yogurts, produce, 25 lb bags of grains, beans, coconut oil and who knows what else.  The truck is from <a href="http://www.azurestandard.com/" target="_blank">Azure Standard</a> and I highly recommend checking them out.  If you live in their delivery area it&#8217;s a great way to save on high quality food.</p>
<p><strong>Tuesdays</strong>, I&#8217;m also going to start going to the leadership class at taekwondo so I can play with swords.  (I meant to go tonight a certain 8 year old and I had a special date.)</p>
<p>Yeah, <strong>Tuesdays</strong> are pretty rad.</p>
<p><strong>Tuesdays</strong> make me totally happy.</p>
<p>Veggies, fruits, raw milk and <em>swords</em>. What could be better!</p>
<p>Next week, I&#8217;m going to start a &#8220;How <del datetime="2011-06-21T19:49:44+00:00">to</del> I make&#8221; series.  I save a lot of money and get a lot of nourishment from making things like chicken broth, whey, beans, dried fruit, and kombucha.  And it really doesn&#8217;t take all that much time just a little planning.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Squatty-Peach.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3770" title="Squatty Peach" src="http://www.girl-heroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Squatty-Peach-300x200.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="200" /></a></p>
<p>Oh and does anyone know what this variety of peach is called?  I call them &#8220;squatty peaches&#8221; but I&#8217;m sure they must have a more flattering name.  Have you ever had one? They are SOOOO good and they have that wonderful peach skin!  Oh yes, I love the texture of fuzzy peach skin.  People who peel peaches are crazy.</p>
<p>Hugs and High Fives,<br />

<p>Yesterday, I was reading the comments on <a href="http://heathereatsalmondbutter.com/" target="_blank">HEAB</a> and came across <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/02/23/real.food.challenge/index.html" target="_blank">this article</a> which led me to the <a href="http://nourishedkitchen.com/" target="_blank">Nourished Kitchen</a> blog (which btw I ended up subscribing too). As far as I can tell, <a href="http://nourishedkitchen.com/" target="_blank">The Nourished Kitchen</a> seems to be a blog devoted to traditional food preparation.  A very cool blog, I might add.</p>
<p>However, I found the title of the CNN article, <em>&#8220;An Inconvenient Challenge: Eat &#8220;Real Rood&#8221; For a Month&#8221; </em>misleading. It should have said eat &#8220;<em>Traditionally Prepared Food for a Month&#8221; </em>because if you are using traditional methods of preparation you have no choice but for your food to be real. You can&#8217;t sprout Cheerios. Not only was the title of article misleading I feel like it was somewhat irresponsible.  Why?  The majority of Americans are struggling to make some simple changes such as not eating out every night of the week or switching from white to wheat. Then when these Americans read &#8220;Eat Real Food&#8221;, they scroll down with hope only to find out they must make their own lard and grind their own grains if they want to be healthy.   Suddenly, for some, eating &#8220;real food&#8221;becomes more than a challenge, it becomes impossible and they give up before they even begin.  I&#8217;ve been reading and trying various methods of traditional food preparation for years and even I felt a little overwhelmed reading it. Then again, <a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/2009/05/08/fluffy-friday-i-need-help/" target="_blank">I have issues</a>.</p>
<p>The CNN article was presented as it if was simply about eating real when, in fact, it was about eating <em>traditionally </em>prepared food. I like traditional foods.  I own <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0967089735?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=newscnomad-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0967089735" target="_blank">Nourishing Traditions</a> by Sally Fallon, the Bible of traditional food preparation.  I do soak my beans. I&#8217;ve tried sprouting. I&#8217;ve bought raw milk.  Hell, I even bought raw colostrum once which tasted the way baby spit up smells.  <em>BUT</em> I also have canned beans on my shelf and bread that <em>someone else </em>sprouted <em>and baked</em> in my fridge.  I don&#8217;t grind my own grain.  I don&#8217;t churn my own butter.  <em>I live in 2010 not 1010.</em> I do the <em>BEST I CAN </em>with the resources I have and I refuse to feel guilty anymore.  I get really tired of the media telling me I&#8217;m not thin enough, pretty enough, rich enough, and now they are telling me I&#8217;m not healthy enough because my cottage cheese came off the shelf. Sure I&#8217;d love to make my own yogurts and my own chicken stocks.  I might even pluck a chicken if I had too.  Last summer, <a href="http://www.likelegos.com/2009/09/fun-at-the-fair/" target="_blank">I went to the fair </a>to talk to goat breeders about buying a milk goat but I came to the conclusion I like <em>a lot</em> of things in life and milking a goat twice a day doesn&#8217;t make the cut. Health is a priority including my mental health.  A few years ago I nearly drove myself (and my family) nuts trying to eat 100% traditionally prepared foods.  When I feel overwhelmed I get depressed and when I get depressed I&#8217;m doing good if I cook at all much less figure out what grains I need to sprout on Monday so I can grind flour and bake bread all day on Saturday.</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve always said I don&#8217;t do moderation well but after reading this article I realize I don&#8217;t give myself enough credit.  Okay so I may suck when it comes to eating <em>a</em> <em>handful </em>of M&amp;M&#8217;s (which is why<a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/2009/05/08/fluffy-friday-i-need-help/" target="_blank"> I haven&#8217;t had one in over two years</a>) but I&#8217;ve gotten pretty good at eating healthy <em><strong>and</strong></em> maintaining my sanity.  In one of my ideal worlds, I pick deep red peppers from my garden, get up at dawn to milk my goats, collect eggs from the henhouse, sprout <em>all</em> my grains, make yogurt from my goat&#8217;s milk, and my kids delight in my homemade cheeses.  In my other ideal world, I travel the continents, enjoy frequent museum visits, have lunches with friends, spend weeks camping, become a world class martial artist, write screenplays that actually get made, compete in figure competitions, spend hours frolicking at the beach (<em>sans cellulite</em>), build lifelike famous monuments out of Legos with my kids and have enough energy left over at the end of the day to carry on <em>important</em> conversations with my husband. Neither ideal is going to be fully realized and certainly not <em>both</em> of them.  I&#8217;ve realized I am my happiest somewhere in the middle.  I spend some time in the kitchen preparing traditional food but I also spend a lot of time outside of it enjoying other gifts in my life and yes&#8230;sometimes that means, for time&#8217;s sake, I will use canned beans or even (<em>gasp</em>) take a trip through the drive-thru.</p>
<p>This is how I merge <a href="http://www.girl-heroes.com/2010/02/09/gh-food-101/" target="_blank">REAL food</a> into my REALity to keep my <em>sanity</em>.</p>
<p>How do you make real food a part of your reality?</p>
