GH 101 – Rest

Rest

I often underestimate the power of rest.

People don’t build strength during their workouts they build it while they are sleeping. Sleep allows our bodies the chance to repair and rejuvenate. It’s a shame to bust azz in the gym only to get less than adequate sleep.  Enough sleep also improves our immunity, metabolism, memory, moods, ability to learn and it’s not called it beauty sleep for nothing. Sleep is when your cells repair themselves. If you are stuck at a weightloss plateau it’s possible you aren’t getting enough rest.  A full night’s rest also gives you a better chance of passing by the 7-11 on your way home from work.  When I’m not getting my ZZZZZs I am MUCH more likely to cave in and eat the entire bag of chips I’m saving for my sane day.  I’m a almost annoyingly very emotional person and almost everynight I get really cranky if I stay up past my bedtime. It’s not just crankiness but depression and hopelessness.  I become Eeyore with a temper but in the morning after a good nights rest, I wake up feeling like Tigger (but hopefully less annoying).

How much sleep is enough? On average people need (I betcha know!)…. 8 hours but individual needs can vary from 6-9 hours per night.  Only you know how much you need.

I really don’t know what else to say about sleep other than it’s really important and you don’t want to be around me when I haven’t had enough.

xoxo,
jenn

I need my sleep too esp. when I am hitting the weights hard. A couple of weeks ago, I started lifting really heavy and was told to get enough rest. Didn’t listen and completely fell apart! Now, I turn the lights out at 11p at the latest and get at least 8 hours. (I am also a bear in the morning – totally need time to drink my coffee and “wake up”)
